Can you use essential oils on hair and scalp? What properties do they boast? I answer the most burning essential-oil questions in this post. 😉

Natural products are growing in popularity because we are becoming aware of the strength of mother nature’s blessings. Still, a question comes up: are all natural products good?

What are essential oils?

These substances are extracted from dried or fresh plants: leaves, seeds, roots, stems or flowers. Essential oils are obtained through the steam distillation. They aren’t as thick as other oils but resemble lightweight watery serums.

Qualities of essential oils

Essential oils are mostly made up of ketones, tarpenes, esters and alcohols. They have power to heal but can also be used to enhance beauty thanks to antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. Additionally, essential oils have a therapeutic effect, regulate the production of sebum and increase the blood flow. They are soluble in all types of fats and alcohols, therefore, they are the perfect base of perfume.

What about hair care? Are essential oils suitable?

Feel free to use essential oils on your hair. Thanks to antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, they are the perfect remedy for dandruff, psoriasis, hair loss and oily hair. Still, you must find out which essential oil works best for you.

Oily hair loves thyme oil, rosemary oil and tea tree oil. Dry hair makes the most of lavender oil and orange peel oil. To treat dandruff, use sage or eucalyptus oil. Hair growth is encouraged by lavender, rosemary, pine and thyme oil. Hair in bad condition will benefit from thyme, lavender, rosemary or juniper oil.

Essential oils may have an irritating effect so use them sparingly.

Essential oils in beauty products

You need to use them carefully. These active, highly-concentrated substances may cause irritations, particular on sensitive or dry skin. Before use, always do a patch test, dilute the oil in other oil or use it sparingly.

Which essential oils to choose?

Choosing products rich in essential oils is the easiest way. Pure essential oil is pricey so it’s best if you get a cosmetic featuring essential oils and not worry about anything.
