Have you ever been in a situation where your freshly purchased pressed powder, eyeshadow, or blusher crushed when it slipped out of your hands and hit the floor? I crushed my Laura Mercier powder like that… the sight of scattered cosmetic all over the floor knowing how much it cost, was truly pitiful.
In a situation as such there are two options: you either cry about it and through the powder away or you can brush the tears and try to save it. You can do it!
I decided to save my powder. I gathered what I could into the container and I started to go through the Internet to find some clues. It’s a situation that happened to me for the first time – though I knew there is something that can be done about it, I wasn’t entirely sure how to get to it.
How to fix crushed pressed cosmetics? We can save powders, blushers, and eyeshadows
I present to you a step by step guide on how to fix crushed eyeshadows or how to restore the functionality of other pressed cosmetics that ended up falling to the ground.
You will need:
- rectified spirit,
- a plastic bag,
- masher, pestle, or rolling pin,
- large coin.
The instruction step by step:
- Place a whole crushed cosmetic in a plastic bag. Take out also the parts that did not detach.
- Using the masher, pestle, or rolling pin or another hard tool (e.g. one end of cutlery), crush the product. Make sure it is crushed properly and that all parts are the same size.
- Take the powder out of the bag onto the tray or a bowl and add a few drops of rectified spirit. Thanks to it, you will gain a mash that can be easily placed in the original packaging. Do not use too much because the mix cannot be too watery or the cosmetic’s quality may worsen.
- Place the mash in the original container and using a coin (best with a diameter equal to packaging’s diameter) wrapped in a paper towel (it will absorb the moisture) press the mash. It is important to strive for a smooth surface so the use of fingers will not work, though you can do it as a last resort.
- Set the product aside somewhere dry for a few hours. The alcohol will evaporate, leaving a dry and hardened cosmetic. Whole again!
Is it worth it to save crushed cosmetics?
When searching the forums I came across numerous comments that went like “not worth it”. I strongly disagree! Remember that fixing up crushed cosmetic is just a few minutes of your time.
I’m against the waste of money that I spent on the cosmetic – if the product is still suitable for use (and especially when I just bought it!), it is worth spending a moment to try to save it. You will be able to still use it and it won’t be necessary to buy a new one. Additionally, I want to mention that it is an ecological solution in the spirit of zero waste.
Let me know if you managed to save some of your cosmetics and whether my guide was helpful to you. Perhaps I do more like this one in the future 🙂
