Today a post dealing with the subject of face serum. With a beauty product that hides many secrets. I’m genuinely curious how many facts – which I’m about to present – will leave you surprised. I think that quite a lot!
FACE SERUM: FACTS
What’s a face serum? In short, this is a beauty product which distinctive feature is a high concentration of chemical constituents. Such product contains more nutrients than regular face care products and is at the same time lighter and better-absorbing. It’s widely believed that serum is both a remedy to deal with all skin ailments and a kind of a cosmetic-medication.
Let me give you a few fun facts concerning face serum. Did you know that…?
1. Face serum IS NOT a better substitute to a face cream.
Many women use face serum interchangeably with a face cream. In most cases they keep using a face cream, however, that they put it away and go for a strong serum once a particular skin problem gets more serious. This is a huge mistake! Serum and cream are two completely different skincare cosmetics that handle two completely separate tasks – in short, cream works rather on the skin’s surface, whereas serum reaches deeper skin layers. Therefore, instead of replacing one product with another, it’s wiser to make use of both. You should apply serum first, and then follow with a cream that will take care of epidermis and create a protective coat. Applying serum prior to putting on a cream may intensify the effects delivered by the latter.
2. NOT EVERY face serum rejuvenates and delivers the same effects.
More often than not I see people being floored when I tell them that I apply a moisturizing serum, or a serum that is supposed to brighten my complexion. Just few know that there is more to a serum than being an anti-age cosmetic, therefore they wrongly attribute skin lift effect to every single face serum. This isn’t true because not every serum is responsible for delivering the youthful look to face. The way a serum works is determined by the ingredients it’s made from. Obviously, there are face serums that make skin look younger and this effect is credited to vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 and other similar. However, the majority of common face serums don’t create such effects. What they do instead is ensuring skin hydration and discoloration removal.
3. Face serum CAN be used by the young too.
The above-mentioned point is linked with another false conviction that many people hold to. Namely, it’s commonly believed that serum is a product that only mature people should reach for. Many girls are put off from using face serum being convinced that this is a really strong product so it must target mature skin only. You can’t be further from the truth! It’s worth knowing that by definition mature skin is has 25 years and more, which is pretty early, isn’t it? Also, the effects a particular serum has, how strong it is and what skin problem it targets is determined by the ingredients. As you can see, not all face serums would give you skin lift. If your skin is young and isn’t affected by any serious ailments, you can surely make good use of a a decent portion of hydration that a face serum offers.
4. It’s BAD PRACTICE to use face serum only.
I guess, this would be a kind of paraphrase of the point 1. Using just face serum doesn’t make much sense because all the nourishing substances vanish from skin if you skip applying face cream. Besides, some face serums, e.g. with retinol, may irritate skin and make it sensitive to the sunlight, therefore following with a face cream is advised (especially if this cream contains sunscreen).
5. Some serums MAY irritate sensitive skin.
Indeed, as I’ve mentioned it above, face serum may sometimes leave skin irritated. And it doesn’t mean that the serum works badly – actually, it’s the other way round. Often a good face serum contains a various types of acids (like for example ascorbic acid, which is vitamin C) which main task is to exfoliate skin in greater or lesser degree. And if we exfoliate dead epidermal cells and skip applying face cream, then we can take skin irritation for granted. Temporary, yet troublesome.
6. A good face serum ISN’T something that only well-off can afford.
Do you too think that face serum is a cosmetic used by rich people, whereas the rest is left with face cream only? Well, this is a pretty silly classification of skincare products that has literally nothing in common with the reality. Both face serums and creams can be either extremely expensive or surprisingly low-priced. Therefore, everybody can afford to treat the skin with a face serum. And everybody should!
7. Face serum CAN be used solo.
Another weird conviction is that face serum is a product used in beauty salons only. Well, basically it’s true that there are many beauty treatments that require using serums – after all this is a highly concentrated product – but this doesn’t mean that this cosmetic should be used by beauticians only. Today each one of us can reach for a face serum and introduce it into our daily beauty regimen.
